News: Increase in Banana Production in Davao Region -
03 Sep 2010
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics reported that in April-June 2010, banana production was estimated at 2,520 thousand mt. This was 0.29 percent above the 2,513 thousand mt level in the same period in 2009 (Table 1). The increase in production was attributed to additional area harvested in Davao Region, more bearing hills harvested in Northern Mindanao, and expansion in area of cavendish variety in SOCCSKSARGEN by Standard Fruits Philippine Corporation (STANFILCO).
The 2,520 thousand mt of banana production during April-June 2010 accounted for 55 percent of the total banana production of 4,571 thousand mt in the first half of 2010.
Area planted during the first semester of 2010 was recorded at 440.35 thousand hectares which was up by 0.41 percent from last year's level of 438.54 thousand hectares (Table 2). The number of bearing trees increased by 1.06 percent, from 266.63 million in January-June 2009 to 269.46 million in 2010.
