Event: Over 180 companies to showcase new designs at National Trade Fair -

Over 900 new product designs will be showcased from over 184 companies from the 17 regions of the Philippines at the National Trade Fair (NTF) on March 12-16 at the SM Megatrade Halls of the SM Megamall. NTF is the Philippines’ authoritative trade show for the best products throughout the archipelago, reflecting the unique resources and people’s craftsmanship distinct in each region.
The fair serves as a government platform to boost the capabilities of Philippine enterprises. “The country’s economic activities are greatly influenced by our homegrown enterprises; their value-added contribution sustains the need for sources of livelihood,” said Trade Assistant Secretary Fe Agoncillo-Reyes, Executive Director of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).
The NTF is organized by CITEM in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry Regional Operations Group (DTI-ROG), Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT), Product Design and Development Center of the Philippines (PDDCP), Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), and the Bureau of Small and Medium Enterprise Development (BSMED).
Other fair highlights are: (1) One Town One Product (OTOP) Philippines, a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that aims to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs, will feature products of select towns using indigenous materials, local skills and talents; as well as (2) Raw Materials Setting featuring semi-processed forms and new applications of ten raw materials with enormous potential: banana (bark, leaves, bud), coconut (coir, peat, bark, wood, fiber), corn (cob, husk, silk), fish scales, Manila palm (branch, twigs, fruits, fiber), recycled wastes (tin cans and plastic), sabutan leaves, tahong shells, water hyacinth (stems and leaves), and woven fibers made of abaca, buntal and raffia.
“Through our participation in NTF, our Santa Claus creations now reach Kuwait, Saipan, Japan, Australia, Sweden, U.S., and Europe,” said Tony Boy Santos, owner of Christmas Factory, manufacturer of Christmas décor made from poly-resin with fiberglass. The hobby that started in 1998 grew into an exporting company through continuous participation in the NTF.
The Philippines’ own version of Hungarian sausages and frankfurters were also made known through the NTF. “The NTF helped us to show our MSG-free and food coloring-free frankfurters to the hearts of local and foreign buyers,” said Rosemarie Lee, Marketing Officer of SVG Food Corporation, maker of Hero Great Bites. “The NTF also became our testing ground to measure how our pricing, packaging, and marketing strategies will be accepted by the market, through this effort, we hope that our company will become a dominant player in the manufacture of Hungarian sausages” she added.
NTF likewise serves as a venue to create jobs for indigenous communities that were able to preserve their cultural heritage. “The NTF encouraged appreciation of Tiboli culture and crafts,” said Melchi Uyasan, Manager of T ’boli Trade and Crafts, based in Lake Sebu, South Cotobato. “Through the fair, many Tiboli women now discover their worth and found their place in the community for many of them can now contribute to the needs of their families,” Uyasan added.
The NTF 2007 attracted 894 trade buyers and generated 163.9 million pesos worth of sales.
